FIONA IN BRAZIL
Mt name is Fiona and I was a UK volunteer in Brazil for 6 months.
I was volunteering at CEP-Rua. Their mission is to conduct teaching, research, and outreach to improve the situation of at-risk populations, with a focus on promotion of health, rights, resilience, social policies, and ecological support networks. The project was very varied and we were able to take on other projects from other campuses. The only activities that were compulsory were the weekly seminar regarding psychology topics which alternate e.g. from sexual violence to adopting children and its affects. Playing tennis twice a week with underprivileged kids was also a lot of fun. We had meetings with the legal department as both Bianca, another UK volunteer, and myself are lawyers. We were taken into the community to get some hands on experience and to meet with people in favelas (shanty towns) and other volunteers.
I ALSO ATTENDED
some art psychology projects where the kids were given the chance to express themselves through art.
I ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO
conduct research into prostitution in Brazil. I could also help the other post-graduate students with their projects.
I FOUND THAT IT IS REALLY
up to you to push your interests. As the project was connected to other divisions you could get the most out of it!
