ANDREW & LONE – ECUADOR – 8 MONTHS.
Andrew and Lone travelled to Guayaquil in Ecuador to volunteer on the CHARLOTTE MILLER ART PROJECT (CMAP). This project works with young people in Ecuador and Mexico, primarily with children who are working or living on the streets.
BEING IN GUAYAQUIL
and working with the JUCONI & community kids was such a big culture shock, so having your partner around was a tremendous help in terms of working together, staying focused on the workshops & supporting each other through all new experiences.
It also felt great to be working towards different goals together, whether the week’s workshop ahead or later on the big task of putting on four exhibitions in a week and to be able to share both the hard work and the joyful experience.
THE EXPERIENCE BROUGHT OUT OUR DIFFERENT STRENGTHS
and also sides of us that we didn’t know about because we were put in a completely new context.
Volunteering has been very different from our old jobs in London and it’s really opened up to a whole new set of work areas in the future as we’re keen to do more community art workshops and other people/creativity-led projects. The experience made us use a more broad set of skills than just our professional abilities within design and it’s feels great now to be more aware of these skills and what we can achieve together in future projects.
The project offers innovative and creative experiences that can build self-confidence and sense of self-worth. The project also gives young people practical creative skills – photography, for example – and the confidence and support to go on and use those skills in the future.
