Project Description

ALISTAIR – BOLIVIA

My name is Alistair and I was an ICYE-UK volunteer in Bolivia for 12 months.

A2WATER FOR PEOPLE is a non-profit organization that helps implement water facilities in areas of Bolivia where there are problems finding a clean water supply, or where there is no existing supply to villages in the countryside. The Location is Cochabamba, Bolivia The project create clean, efficient water supplies for those who had nothing before. Other projects improve sanitation levels. Water for People also run workshops in these communities about improving hygiene. Their vision is a world where all people have access to safe drinking water and sanitation; a world where no one suffers or dies from a water- or sanitation-related disease. Volunteers help people in developing countries improve their quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities and health and hygiene education programs.

I HAPPILY WORKED FOR

two projects. For three days a week I worked with an organisation which helps implement water facilities in areas of Bolivia where there are problems A3finding a clean water supply, or where there is no existing supply to villages in the countryside. The organisation is called Water for People, based in America, and they operate in various countries including Bolivia. They run projects which create clean, efficient water supplies for those who had nothing before, also installing taps in every household within these countryside communities. Other projects improve sanitation levels through installing proper showers and toilets. Water for People also run workshops in these communities about improving hygiene, from basic things like teaching children to brush their teeth, through to more advanced plumbing skills for adults.

A4THE OTHER ORGANIZATION I WORKED FOR WAS

dealing with a human rights organisation and is based in the city of Cochabamba, where I used to live The organisation is called Instituto de Terapia E Investigacion (ITEI) and it helps with medical treatment and therapy for those who have faced torture or have suffered through police/government aggression as well as investigating confrontations and making people aware of the democratic problems in the country.
